It came out of research by psychologist Carol Dweck and her colleagues. Their research focused on kids. But the concept applies to adults, too. Kids and adults can develop the belief that things that are hard to do now may not always be hard. Here are some common myths — and truths.

Not true. We all have a mix of fixed and growth mindsets that change based on our experiences and the feedback we get. Myth 2: Growth mindset is about being positive. Growth mindset means taking feedback, learning from experience, and coming up with strategies for improving. Myth 3: Praise builds a growth mindset.

The important thing is how a person approached a challenge, not how hard they worked, or how successful they were. Learn about strengths that come from taking on challenges. But people who learn and think differently often face more setbacks than other people. They may feel judged or criticized.

And that can make them feel insecure or defensive, which can get in the way of growth. They knew who they were, and they felt good about who they were. We also decided that humility was defined not by self-deprecating behavior or attitudes but by the esteem with which you regard others. Good behavior flows naturally from that kind of humility… if your attitude is that only smarter people have something to teach you, your learning opportunities will be very limited.

But if you have a humble eagerness to learn something from everybody, your learning opportunities will be unlimited. Generally, you can be humble only if you feel really good about yourself—and you want to help those around you feel really good about themselves, too.
