Hi, just to put a spanner in the works i'd go for the explorer. The lack of an sd card slot is a big downside but the graphics are better. The games are also a lot more versatile and they adapt to your child.
I bought by son the leapster explorer last christmas. He is now 4 and very capable. The 3 year old can play as well, wouldn't normally recommend for this young though but he's known all his phonics since he was 2.
